PALIO FOCUS: THE RACE AND THE TICKETS

  • THE RACE - Twice a year, in summertime, there is held "the Palio" in Siena: ten horses and ten jockeys – riding bareback -represent ten of the seventeen Contrade (city wards) in which the city is divided. Rather than being just a horse race, the Palio is the culmination of ongoing rivalry and competition between the contrade and it is invested with passion and pride. During this special occasion, the Piazza del Campo Square is prepared for the race and its ring is covered with tuff clay while formal and informal rituals take place as the days proceed. Although the official race is on July 2nd and on August 16th, the whole feast actually takes place over 4 days (starting June 29 and August 13) during which 6 trial runs, that are very exciting to watch.
  • TICKETS – Given that it is an ancient traditional feast and the race is not even held in a stadium, there aren’t proper bleachers or real ticket office with a formal price list. The Palio is a feast of the entire city, and neither the Municipality nor the districts earn money from the race, selling tickets. But, on the other side, the private owners of the buildings overlooking the square can rent out the seats in their own stands, balconies and windows. The consequence is that getting a seat is not easy at all and that the pric issue is a jungle without many middle ways: it goes from 0 (if you decide to watch it from inside the square, whose access is totall free) directly to a minimum of several hundreds euros (up to even more than a thousand) per person for a seat, according to the location. To whatch it from inside the Square is exciting and inexpensive, but is not for everybody since you should arrive far in advance to get a good spot, waiting hours under the summer sun (many Sienese stay there all day long since early morning).
  • Please, be also aware that there are no toilets inside the square and, once the square is closed, there is no way to get out until the race is over.
  • For tours booked well ahead we can provide ticket services, helping clients to find the best spot at a proper price.

  • Then, in the late afternoon, first insight view about the legendary Palio: watch the “Prova generale” trial race that is, among the 6 trials, the most exciting at all, also because is preceded by the so-called "carica": a squad of Carabinieri (national military police of Italy) on horseback, wielding swords, demonstrating a mounted charge around the track. They take one lap at a walk, in formation, and a second at a gallop before exiting out of Piazza del Campo from a very narrow lane.
  • Evening: the rehearsal dinner, a charming tradition. After the trial race, each Contrada will hold an invitation-only dinner in its district the night before the race. Those dinners are held out in the open air, in squares or streets and are the best way to live and feel the real spirit of the Palio: it is an experience and a show to attend, more than a food issue. Songs, toasts and speeches will enliven the whole neighborhood, "dressed up" for the Feast.
