說明 Introduction

Sun Moon Lake is the largest and most beautiful alpine lake in Taiwan.

The beauty of the lake, from dawn to dusk and from season to season, might remind you of a sketch, a colorful watercolor painting!

Black Tea: Sun Moon Lake is located at an altitude of 700m, surrounded by mountains and lakes with a remarkable environment. Heavy moist and stable yearly average temperature makes the tea trees grow thick and rich tea leaves which produce carmine and clear tea. "

Yuchi has become the main base for the cultivation of Assam tea during the period of the Japanese colonization. The Japanese also established the Tea Manufacture Experiment Station, intending to develop the tea technology and promote many new hybrids, or cultivars, of tea.

Pottery
Yuchi, Jiji, and Shuili are well-known for pottery and the high-quality clay available in the area. Shuli's Snake Kiln, Jizi Mizih Kiln, Tianxing Kiln, Sheshui Kiln, and Cinshou Kiln are now leisure pottery parks with DIY activities available for visitors.

Owls are considered sacred birds to the Thao aboriginal people; this is why you will find many handicrafts representing owls in souvenirs shops all around Sun Moon lake.

The Legend of the White Deer
According to the legend, the Thao people discovered Sun Moon lake while chasing a white deer.
When entering the Central Mountain Range during hunting, some Thao hunters spotted a white deer and eventually led them to the lake.
The hunters were so impressed by the landscape with its lush greenery, fish-filled waters, and abundant wildlife that they decided to relocate to the lakeside, where they still live nowadays.

The white deer is immortalized as a marble statue on Lalu Island.

In the middle of the lake is Lalu Island. The Shao tribe considers the island a sacred place, tourists cannot visit the island. Only witch candidates of the tribe would have to come to the island to seek approval of the ancestors' spirits.

Itinerary

Stand Up Paddling (SUP) at the lake

Sun Moon Lake
is a fairly calm water, especially before the sightseeing boat opens in the early morning. The mist in the mountains in the morning is like being in an environment that can touch the soul. There is no noise, quietly rowing on the lake, talking to yourself, and sinking into nature.

Years of teaching experience tell us that beginning to learn SUP in calm waters is the most effective. In this case, to succeed SUP, you only need to control the core balance, let the body get used to the board's response on the lake, and operate the SUP to go in the direction you want to go in.

After training in calm waters, when you get to the open seas, you can enjoy the fun of the sport even if you are familiar with the operation.

During the fall and the winter (November - March), you can choose 3 different timetables with each a duration of 3 hours to do the stand up paddling. Enjoy the sunrise on the lake early in the morning (05:00 - 08:00), or during the day (08:30 - 11:30), or in the afternoon (12:30 - 15:30). You can also combine these programs to enjoy the supping even longer!

During the spring and the summer (April - October), you can also choose 3 different timetables with each a duration of 3 hours to do the stand up paddling. You can also combine these programs to enjoy the supping even longer!

Wen Wu Temple (文武廟)

During the Japanese occupation, there were two temples on the banks of the lake: Longfeng Temple in Shuishe Village and Yihua Hall. But when the Japanese built their hydroelectric power plants, the water levels rose and the temples had to be removed. The Japanese electric company paid compensation and the temple managements combined the resources and build a new temple on the northern shore of the lake, the Wenwu Temple.

It overlooks the clearness of Sun Moon Lake - surrounded by a stunning mountainous backdrop -  the view from‭ Wenwu temple‭ is stunning! Go early in the morning if you want to experience its arresting beauty in silence and - if possible - avoid the weekend days!

There are 366 steps covering the 150-meter distance, symbolizing the 366 days in a year (including an extra day in a leap year).

Ci-en Pagoda

Ci-en Pagoda was built by Chiang Kai-Shek in memory of his mother in 1971. The construction was very challenging because the materials had to be shipped over the lake and moved up the mountain. The pagoda is 46 meters tall, bringing its top to an even 1,000 meters above sea level. It overlooks the clearness of Sun Moon Lake - surrounded by a stunning mountainous backdrop -  the view from the top is stunning and probably the best view of Sun Moon Lake! If possible - avoid the weekend days! Climbing to the top of the 46 meter pagoda to enjoy the views of Sun Moon Lake is a must!

To reach the Ci'en Pagoda you will need to reach the Xuanguang Pier and follow the Quinglong Mountain Trail. This trail is about 700m. Alongside the track are beautiful trees and flowers, which make the track easy and comfortable to walk along.
