Black Tea: Sun Moon Lake is located at an altitude of 700m, surrounded by mountains and lakes with a remarkable environment. Heavy moist and stable yearly average temperature makes the tea trees grow thick and rich tea leaves which produce carmine and clear tea. "
Yuchi has become the main base for the cultivation of Assam tea during the period of the Japanese colonization. The Japanese also established the Tea Manufacture Experiment Station, intending to develop the tea technology and promote many new hybrids, or cultivars, of tea.
Pottery
Yuchi, Jiji, and Shuili are well-known for pottery and the high-quality clay available in the area. Shuli's Snake Kiln, Jizi Mizih Kiln, Tianxing Kiln, Sheshui Kiln, and Cinshou Kiln are now leisure pottery parks with DIY activities available for visitors.
Owls are considered sacred birds to the Thao aboriginal people; this is why you will find many handicrafts representing owls in souvenirs shops all around Sun Moon lake.
The Legend of the White Deer
According to the legend, the Thao people discovered Sun Moon lake while chasing a white deer.
When entering the Central Mountain Range during hunting, some Thao hunters spotted a white deer and eventually led them to the lake.
The hunters were so impressed by the landscape with its lush greenery, fish-filled waters, and abundant wildlife that they decided to relocate to the lakeside, where they still live nowadays.
The white deer is immortalized as a marble statue on Lalu Island.
In the middle of the lake is Lalu Island. The Shao tribe considers the island a sacred place, tourists cannot visit the island. Only witch candidates of the tribe would have to come to the island to seek approval of the ancestors' spirits.
