► Lukang, formerly known as Lugang was, until the end of the 19th century an important commercial center, second only to Tainan. Lukang Town is one of Taiwan’s oldest towns and Lukang Old Street was the main business district of Lukang Town back in the early days. The end of the glory of Lukang arrives when the harbor silted completely – now the sea is more than 2 kms away - and by the Japanese invasion, that shut down most of the trade with mainland China. The city became simply too poor, but its glorious past it is still visible as you can find here some of the most gorgeous temples in Taiwan. The two most famous temples in Lukang are Longshan Temple and Tienhou Temple. Lukang Longshan Temple is also the largest temple in Lukang. Several old buildings, instead of being demolished to make room for new ones, as happened in the rest of Taiwan, have remained until today. Lukang Old Street is filled by traditional Taiwanese style houses with carved doorways and windows, intricately designed arches over the main entrance, thin red brick walls and red tiled road, as well as retro green mailboxes hanging outside the houses boasting an antique charm. The red-brick streets of the Lukang Old Street area are lined with traditional buildings and snack shops.
► the Taichung Literature Museum: it used to be police quarters, which were built in 1932 during the Japanese colonial period. It consists of six buildings, which are used for permanent exhibitions, themed exhibitions, children's literature, workshops and lectures, themed dining area, and administration.
► Visit the Six Arts Cultural Center, built in 1937 during the Japanese rule, it is a martial arts hall for daily training of martial arts officers and police. The original historical appearance is completely preserved, which is of great value for preservation, reuse and architectural research.
► The walk will continue to Miyahara, a red-brick architecture built by Miyahara Takeo, a Japanese ophthalmology doctor in 1927. It was the largest ophthalmology clinic in Taichung during the Japanese colonial period. Today, it is an elegant place with several pastry businesses. Wonderfully restorated, the building is a place full of history and wonder.
► Taichung National Theater, visit the theater and have a look at the futuristic roof. The theater was designed by Japanese architect Toyo Ito. Using the concept of the primitive caves and holes, Toyo Ito designed the worlds' first and only Sound Cave Curved Wall for National Taichung Theater. There are no vertical and horizontal structures and it’s the world’s first curved surfaced hanging structure architectur
